Beginning with the new Armonia sailings from Miami, Cuba will be open to Americans onboard MSC Cruises, following people-to-people requirements. On MSC Opera the company offers a wide range of shore excursions, including beach days and snorkeling without people-to-people requirements. On June 4, 2019, the US Government announced new regulations (economic sanctions) that ended group travel to Cuba, including via US-homeported cruise liners, effective immediately.

Additional activities included live-band karaoke, music and dancing after dark, movie nights and a Super Power Party on the last night of the cruise where guests could create their own alter-egos. The Wi-Fi was considerably slow throughout the cruise, better in some ports than others and iffy at best during our days at sea. Trade “sea days” for “see more” days on an all-around all-star - Freedom of the Seas®. Experience more to do onboard the ship, with fewer days between some of the world's most exotic travel destinations. I spent quite some time relaxing (and working) in the library, which offered several shelves full of books and board games that guests could sign out as long as they returned them by the end of the cruise. There was also a jogging track around the top level of the ship, as well as a fitness center — yoga and meditation sessions were free of charge, but pilates and cycling classes were available for an additional fee. There was also a soothing spa and relaxation area — available for an extra $26 per day plus spa treatments — and a hair salon so you could get a quick trim or style before a big night out. In addition to the Craze Band, Fathom arranged for a local Cuban band to join us between Havana and Cienfuegos, and another from Cienfuegos and Santiago de Cuba, (pictured above).
I put my bags through the security machine, handed over my passport and answered some questions about my trip, which took no time at all. During the last two days of our cruise, there were an increasing number of gastroenteritis cases on the ship that were possibly connected to Norovirus. I really enjoyed rocking out to live music by the Craze Band, a British group that lives aboard the Adonia and plays oldies rock and roll music at night as well as Latin music during deck parties as we pulled into or out of each port. Reservations weren't required at the Pacific Restaurant — it was so packed the first night I was handed a pager that finally went off 35 minutes later when my table was ready — so for sake of convenience, I ate most of my meals at the buffet. It was fun meeting up with new friends on our own time for meals without having to sit through a 60- or 90-minute long dinner and risk missing out on any of the nightly onboard activities. It’s time for the time of your life — multiple times a day.
In 2019, Cuba was slated to welcome a record number of US cruise tourists as in 2019-Q1 (January-May) were handled ~400,000 (100% increase over 2018-Q1). Tourism is Cuba's second-biggest source of earnings (after medical services), with annual revenues estimated at ~USD 2,5 billion. SInce 2017, Alaska Airlines offers regular nonstop flights to Havana from Los Angeles (California USA). An 80-min JetBlue flight from Fort Lauderdale (Florida) to Havana costs less than USD 100. Previously, air travel from USA to Cuba was through charter flights only.
The program is not compatible with people-to-people, however, so it's pretty unlikely many from the U.S. can go.
Thank you for visiting MSC Cruises
But it’s more than just convenient — rev up for your cruise from Miami with the city’s nonstop action, from party-ready South Beach to the Mediterranean style of Coral Gables, plus spicy Little Havana, which hums to an island beat. Once you’ve experienced all the South Florida architectural beauty, energetic street life and sun-kissed beaches, you may want to extend your stay in the Magic City after your cruise returns. Thomson only sells cruises in the U.K., so it's unlikely that U.S. passengers will be on the cruise.
Of course, this ain’t your typical sun-and-surf Caribbean cruise (although it’s got plenty of that, too). Maybe you’ve got your heart set on history-rich Havana (it turns 500 years old in 2019), with its time-warp 1950s classic cars, crumbling colonial buildings, and storied night spots (such as the Tropicana or Buena Vista Social Club). Or perhaps you want to see the country’s second-largest city and Cuban Revolution–cradle at Santiago de Cuba or visit Cienfuegos, with its UNESCO-protected city center. Both Azamara ships comply with people-to-people regulations through for-fee shore excursions.
Regardless of their US citizenship status, Cuban-born Americans were denied booking on cruise itineraries visiting ports in Cuba. The first Royal Caribbean ship to Cuba was Empress of the Seas with roundtrips from Miami and Tampa. The itinerary program started on April 19, 2017 (5-night Miami to Costa Maya and Havana).
The ban relates to "private and corporate aircraft, cruise ships, sailboats, fishing boats, and other similar aircraft and vessels". The US travel restrictions impacted hundreds of pre-scheduled cruise itineraries, which were adjusted to no longer stop in Cuban seaports. The 7-day round-trip itinerary was from Havana (with 2 overnights) and also out of Cozumel Mexico, visiting Jamaica (Montego Bay) and Grand Cayman Island.
And in between, bond over bites with over 20 ways to dine. You’ll always find bold adventures onboard Independence of the Seas®. From non-stop thrills to mouthwatering dining and the hit Broadway musical Grease, this fan-favorite is your ticket to a memory-maxing getaway. Feel the heat of adventure in The Magic City and cool off with with a cruise to the Bahamas or Caribbean from the Miami cruise port on some of our most amped up ships yet. There’s perhaps no sweeter travel proposition than taking that proverbial bite out of once-forbidden fruit . And juicy Cuba, with its vibrant culture, lively locals, rich history, and transporting tropical setting, is ripe for the picking.
The sinking of USS Maine in Havana Harbor during the Cuban revolt against Spain in 1898 became a major political issue and the immediate cause of the Spanish-American War (April 21 - August 13, 1898). Its terms were favorable to the USA, allowing temporary US control over Cuba. The war also resulted in the USA ceding ownership of the islands Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines. Cuba sits a mere 90 miles from the coast of Florida, but for the past 50 years it may as well have been on the other side of the world, due to regulations that made it a forbidden land for American citizens to visit.
Originally, Cuban-born American citizens weren't allowed to sail, but thankfully Carnival and the Cuban government managed to work things out in time so everyone — whether you were born in the US or Cuba — could experience this historic trip.
